Taj Mahal

As far as attractions go, one simply does not visit the massive subcontinent of India without making a visit to the world-famous tourist sight — you know the one, the Taj Mahal!

The Most Impressive Mausoleum In The World

And as far as famous landmarks go, the Taj Mahal is easily one of the most famous and recognizable in the country — nay, the world.

It needs little to no introduction and is also without a doubt, one of the most romantic spots on Earth, especially come moonlight. It’s easy to see why when you consider the reason behind the monument’s creation.

Built as a labour of love, the Taj Mahal is a monument that was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan to be the final resting place of his beloved favourite wife. And the Taj Mahal also houses the tomb of the emperor himself — talk about till death do us part!

Speaking of which, the tomb of Mumtaz Mahal (the aforementioned emperor’s wife) is the centrepiece of the 17-hectare complex. Other notable features of the exquisite mausoleum also include a mosque, minarets, a guesthouse and a long reflecting pool set in formal gardens.

All in all, it took workers and artisans more than two decades to finally complete the Taj Mahal, with the end result being one of the best (and prettiest!) examples of Mughal architecture in the world.

A good time to visit the Taj Mahal and Agra city, in general, is during the Taj Mahotsav festival held each year in February. This festival is dedicated to recreating the magic of the Mughal era and celebrates its culture, arts, crafts, and cuisine.
